Sustainability

In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Following this principle and in line with our purpose, Kreston Global aims to minimise negative impacts from event-related activities and have started a journey to “carbon net zero”.

Our first steps have been to start measuring events emissions to set achievable and yet ambitious goals, and to develop a sustainable procurement policy that includes ESG criteria that suppliers must comply with. Actions we have already undertaken are:

  • seeking to completely remove single use plastic
  • seeking to use recyclable materials for staging and branding and reduce waste
  • using the event attendee app instead of printed agenda
  • reusing roll-up banners and creating recyclable new ones where needed
  • replacing plastic name badges with recyclable ones
  • buying lanyards made of recycled materials and reuse them for different events
  • travelling by train whenever possible and encouraging members to use greener transport options when available
  • offset event emissions
  • started a Kreston ESG advisory committee to inform members and the Kreston Team on best practice

With regards to the World & EMEA Conference 2023, we have replaced in-person site visits with virtual ones and asked all suppliers to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability (see below). We will reuse existing roll-up banners and lanyards, have selected reusable carpet for all stages, and opted for a more sustainable programme (i.e. no desert activities). After the event, we will measure the conference's emissions and seek to offset what we could not reduce through our partnership with Treedom.

JW Marriott Marquis sustainability actions:

  • Installed multiple sub-meters to monitor consumption more accurately and act upon findings
  • Installed low flow showerheads in all guestrooms to reduce water consumption and energy used to heat the water
  • Installed automatic taps in back of house areas with low flow restrictors/aerators
  • Enabled low use monitoring and smart sleep mode for all elevators
  • Eco set point adjustments in guestrooms during low occupancy periods
  • Smart plant maintenance system (Transcendent) ensuring best efficiency during operation
  • Installed smart technology to kitchen hoods to reduce electricity consumption
  • LED lighting retrofits throughout the property
  • Enhancements to BMS to give even greater controllability to all systems
  • ISO 14001 Environmental management System initiatives for sustainable resourced purchasing and waste segregation and recycling
  • MESH program throughout Marriott to monitor and work towards their Sustainability Program Serve 360. These readings are validated annually by Schneider Electric and reviewed and accredited by Lloyds of London.
  • Purchasing paper from responsible source (FSC certified Paper)
  • Installed Occupancy sensor in wash rooms
  • Installing LED smart TV in guest rooms

The hotel has partnered with a local charity to minimise food waste and support the local community. Every day surplus food from the hotel, including from Kreston's conference, is collected and distributed to food banks and individuals.

In January 2012, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the Green Economy initiative under the slogan: A green economy for sustainable development. Under this initiative, the UAE seeks to become a global hub and a successful model of the new green economy, to enhance the country's competitiveness and sustainability and preserve its environment for future generations.

Helpful information about Dubai

Dubai's climate is sub-tropical and average temperatures in December will vary between 26C during the day and 16C at night.

Dubai has a relaxed dress code but we suggest to bring a jacket for evening activities including the gala dinner which will be outdoors.

The electricity supply is 220/240 volts at 50 cycles and the plus is type G so you might need an adapter and US-made appliances may need a transformer.

Tips are not generally expected, but they are appreciated. An additional 10% is acceptable in hotels and restaurants.

What is the Attendee App mentioned in the registration form?

This app will be released closer to the event and will replace the usual conference agenda. It will include a profile for each attendee, the conference agenda, information on social activities, the EventStream for live posts and much more. It will also allow us to send you alerts to remind you of meeting points, timings etc.

After the conference you will be able to export from the app all contacts you connected with. The app will stay live until April 2024.
